Construction is underway on a new apartment block in Adelaide’s CBD designed to support older women at risk of homelessness. The development will see 50 studio apartments built, providing safe and secure housing, along with on-site support services to help these women rebuild their lives.
The six-storey development, carried out by South Australian builder Mossop Group Pty Ltd. and managed by the SA Housing Trust, will include a community wellbeing manager to assist tenants with any challenges. The Trust will work closely with community and health services to offer in-reach support, including meeting rooms, a computer room with free Wi-Fi, multi-use spaces, and communal gardens aimed at promoting well-being.
“Every woman deserves a safe place to call home and the supports she needs to live well, to participate in community life and thrive. That is exactly what Tucker Street will provide,” Katrine Hildyard, Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence, said.
“Knowing the positive impact that it will have for vulnerable women is important to Mossop and our team,” Aaron Mossop, Director Mossop Construction + Interiors, said.
“Over the course of construction this project will provide jobs to hundreds of South Australian trades and suppliers, with up to 70 workers expected onsite during peak stages.”
Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Nick Champion, and Member for Adelaide, Lucy Hood, celebrated the occasion with a ceremony at the Tucker Street site, as seen below.
The Tucker Street Apartments will provide much-needed support for older women facing homelessness, with a focus on long-term security and well-being. Construction is now underway, and the project is expected to be completed by 2026.
