Wine-lovers rejoice! The Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail is revolutionising wine tours, offering a leisurely stroll amongst the vines of the six beautiful wineries within the region.

Due to it’s tight proximity, one of the most appealing things about Coonawarra for visitors is how easy it is to hopscotch between the amazing wineries it boasts.

This makes the destination even more accessible by foot via the Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail! Best of all, you can take your time over the wine tastings – you wont need to wait for a bus – so meander at your own pace.

While walking is welcome, there’s about a 10 minute stroll between the venues – keep this in mind when you choose your footwear.

Coonawarra is an SA wine region gem nestled in the heart of the Limestone Coast. The small strip of land is alive with stunning landscapes and passionate people who work hard to be recognised as one of Australia’s premium wine producing regions.

The signature wine region is known for its world class red wines, so be sure to get your hands on their famous Cabernet Sauvignon when you get there.

After launching in 2018 and encompassing six wineries in the immediate surrounds of the Coonawarra township, the Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail covers a 5km stretch between these epic locations:

Begin the walk at any of the six wineries along the trail with parking and amenities available at each. Alternatively, begin the walk from the heart of Coonawarra and start of the park – where parking is also available.

If you fall in love with any of the wine you encounter along the way, don’t worry, you won’t have to haul it to the next vineyard – the wineries offer means of freighting your wine purchases to your home.

The trail is enveloped by working vineyards, always a buzz with activity. To compliment the experience, download the Coonawarra Walking Trail App and check in to track your progress, whilst unveiling the rich history, viticulture and winemaking practices along the way. Alternatively, wine-loving walkers can follow the clearly marked signposts along the way.

The six wineries on the trail are all open seven days a week (except some public holidays) and the eateries as advertised. You will be warmly welcomed at all of them for tastings or refreshments.

The trail promises to be leisurely with level footing and gentle terrain even being pram-friendly. We recommend wearing comfy walking shoes, as the trail path is unsealed. If you allow 20 minutes at each winery, the trail should take approximately 3 hours to complete.

Why not have a picnic amongst the vines along the way? We recommend picking up a pre-ordered picnic basket at the Coonawarra Store which offers a treasure trove of local produce.

After an immersive day of wine and vines, why not finish it off with a stay in stunning glamping tents and wake up to the coos of Kookaburras and Cockatoos? Elevate the getaway at SA’s award-winning winery, Bellwether Wines who offer glamping on their beautiful property. See why it has been awarded one of Australian Travellers ‘100 Unique Stays’, here.
