Council Calling on Volunteers for Clean Up Australia Day

Adelaide City Council is urging local residents and visitors to roll up their sleeves and take part in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday March 4th.

A public clean-up will be held in Ellis Park / Tambawodli on West Terrace (next to Adelaide High School) at 9am, followed by a certificate presentation and free BBQ lunch for participants at 11.30am.

“Clean Up Australia Day not only raises awareness about litter reduction and recycling but builds community pride. It is the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and help clean up our local parks and waterways,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO is also encouraging everyone to do their bit towards protecting local ecosystems while improving the appeal of their area.

“Australians generally do the right thing, but with each one of us producing two tonnes of rubbish every year there is still too much waste ending up in our natural environment,” Mr Kiernan said.

Adelaide City Council has proudly supported the event since 2004 and this year is aiming to have over 100 participants take part.

Councillor Megan Hender will be representing Council on the day and is looking forward to joining participants.

“It’s a great event that gets people outdoors and lending a hand in cleaning up our natural environment. I encourage everyone – including schools, social clubs, visitor groups, families and individuals – to get involved,” Megan said.

Gloves, water and sunscreen will be provided for the event but participants are required to wear closed toe shoes. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Groups, including schools and community organisations are asked to pre-register by calling Council Clean Up Australia Day project manager Jim Champion on (08)8203 7220. Individuals can simply turn up on the day.
