The city of Adelaide is poised to host Dale Chihuly’s first major outdoor exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere, presenting a rare opportunity for art aficionados and the general public alike to engage with the works of a groundbreaking international artist. This isn’t just any exhibition; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness the breathtaking “Garden Cycle” series of this internationally acclaimed artist right in our backyard.
Known for his jaw-dropping glass sculptures that seem to defy gravity and logic, Chihuly has chosen the picturesque Adelaide Botanic Garden as the stage for his vibrant creations. From September 27th, 2024, until April 29th, 2025, you’ll be able to wander through this botanical wonderland and discover Chihuly’s masterpieces nestled amongst the greenery.
This is no small feat for Adelaide’s cultural scene. Michael Harvey, the director of the Botanic Garden, stated that it’s a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to experience such an extensive collection of Chihuly’s monumental works in this stunning natural setting.

And Chihuly himself is no stranger to the spotlight. With a multitude of honorary doctorates and fellowships, he’s revolutionized the world of glass art, elevating it from a simple craft to high art. His sculptures are a feast for the eyes, often inspired by and mirroring the organic forms found in nature.
Adelaide has the honour of being only the third international city to host this prestigious exhibition, following in the footsteps of London’s Kew Gardens and Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay. While Chihuly’s work was last seen in Adelaide back in 2000, this time around, he’s bringing a fresh perspective with both new and classic pieces specifically curated to complement the unique beauty of our Botanic Garden.
Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison is thrilled about the coup, predicting that this will be a major drawcard for both domestic and international visitors, showcasing South Australia’s natural and cultural attractions. She envisions visitors returning time and time again to experience Chihuly’s art against the backdrop of the changing seasons, from spring blossoms to summer sunshine and autumn foliage.
The timing of this exhibition is no accident. It cleverly coincides with three school holiday periods and several major local events, enticing visitors to extend their stay and really immerse themselves in the cultural richness of Adelaide.
During the Chihuly exhibition, you’ll be treated to a captivating art trail woven seamlessly into the natural landscape. It’s a multi-sensory experience that’s completely free for all to enjoy.
So, mark your calendars and prepare to be enchanted as Dale Chihuly’s extraordinary vision transforms the Adelaide Botanic Garden into a living gallery of glass. This is an invitation to rediscover the familiar pathways and hidden corners of this beloved city landmark through the lens of an artistic genius.
