South Australia’s dedicated Court of Appeal has officially commenced operations, ushering in a new era in the state’s justice system.
Attorney-General Vickie Chapman said the newly-established court already had 14 matters scheduled – three civil matters and 11 criminal matters.
“The Court’s first hearing is scheduled for later this month, but this may change if urgent matters are listed,” Ms Chapman said.
“In the meantime, work will continue to finalise administrative processes and do the necessary groundwork to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.”
Five Judges have been appointed to sit on the Court of Appeal – Justice Trish Kelly will be the Court’s President, while Justices David Lovell, Sam Doyle, Mark Livesey and Chris Bleby will make up the remainder of the court’s bench.
“The establishment of the Court of Appeal represents a significant shift in the way matters are heard in South Australia,” Ms Chapman said.
“Streamlining matters will ensure a more efficient system, with Judges working in the Court of Appeal developing specific judicial expertise in appeals.”
The Court of Appeal was established through changes to the Supreme Court Act 1935, which passed State Parliament in late 2019.
