COVID-19: AFL Makes Offical Call, Round One Starts Tomorrow

The 2020 AFL season is officially going ahead as of tomorrow night but this season will not look like any other.

AFL CEO Gill McLachlan has just announced that the 2020 AFL season will go ahead, starting tomorrow night with Richmond and Carlton at the MCG.

Changes have been made, with quarters now lasting 16 minutes + time on, and as previously confirmed, this year’s season will be played without spectators.

“We start tomorrow night confident, after conversations with the Chief Medical Officer, that our players are well placed to bear the proportionate risk to play contact sport,” McLachlan stated in this evening’s press conference.

The AFL CEO stressed that this season will not look like any other.

“We must go forward day-by-day listening to the advice and continue to make the best decisions for our industry of balancing wellbeing, welfare, leadership and economic and social impacts,” he said.

“Tonight our industry is unified in making a decision to start.”

The AFLW is set to proceed, however the final two weeks of the home and away season will be forgone, with finals to commence instead.

Stay tuned for updates.
