On Monday 23 March, Prime Minister Scott Morrison made an impassioned speech to Parliament on the coronavirus crisis and what the immediate future will look to Australians.
Stating that the measures announced to date have totalled to $189 billion (10% of economy), the Prime Minister also stated that we may be living like this for six months, possible longer.
This follows the new set of social distancing rules agreed upon by the States and Territories last night which will continue to evolve further.
He states that Governments around Australia will not be complacent and that it will be absolutely vital that every Australian follows the limits.
Avoiding all non essential travel, washing hands thoroughly, coughing and sneezing into your elbow and adhering to the one person per 4 square metre guidelines indoors.
Putting a focus on protecting vulnerable Australians, the elderly, “there is no short term solution to this,” he says.
He also made a plea for Australians to not let fear overtake them, following by thanking the ANZACs and asking for Australians to pledge to not let the virus break their spirits.
The Prime Minister didn’t shy away from stating that this is a once in a hundred year event, a global pandemic and an economic crisis that we have not seen since The Great Depression.
He also stated that to those who have lost their jobs, and inevitably will, or are holding their businesses together, the Parliament and Government will ensure they preserve these businesses and more importantly, once this passes, help Australians get back to their feet.
