In a press conference today with Professor Nicola Spurrier, it was announced that there are two new cases.
The first, is a possible case relating to a male in his 20s. He arrived from NSW by road in the early house of Monday the 21st of December. He also travelled through regional NSW. He got tested on the 22nd, and result was received last night.
This male travelled from Darwin to Sydney on the 18th of December. There was a positive case identified on that flight already. The two people were quite widely separated on that flight, so it wasn’t an obvious link. This has been shared with the National Incident Team.
This person then was in Sydney Airport, then travelled on a flight to Wodonga Victoria, then travelled by car to South Australia.
There are plans to put that person and close contacts in to a medi-hotel.
SA Health have organised a blood test to determine if this is a new case, or an old case. They need to determine if there is viral shedding happening, which can be picked up on a swab. They will look at the body’s antibody response to the virus.
This test result is highly positive, which means it’s much more likely to be an old infection.
There is also a positive case of a traveller in a medi-hotel. The male arrived on Thursday the 18th of December and has been in the medi-hotel since arrival. He travelled to SA via Doha Airways. His day 1 test was negative, and his day 5 test was positive – but given he’s been in the hotel since arrival there is no risk to the public.
SA now has (pending confirmation on first case being an old case) four active cases, with 568 cases altogether.
SA is having a lot of testing done, probably because of NSW travellers requiring testing, but there has been over 5000 tests done yesterday.
It’s a timely reminder to get tested even if you just have a runny nose. Testing stations will be open over Christmas.
