Craigburn Farm residents will soon get to see Treetop Reserve reopen refreshed after almost two months of closure, with upgrades underway for the popular local green space following strong community feedback.
Through a community consultation undertaken from 5 May to 4 June 2025, residents shared what they would like to see in the park’s refresh. Feedback highlighted a desire for better facilities for younger children, more shaded areas, additional seating and improved amenities while still preserving the natural character.
During the consultation, council received a range of views about whether a toilet should be included in the upgrade. Many residents said they wanted to preserve the neighbourhood feel of the reserve and preferred improvements that support short visits, family-friendly use and inclusive play experiences.
Based on this feedback, council said it will move ahead without installing a toilet, but will keep options open for the future if changes are needed.
The City of Mitcham announced the upgrades following the consultation. Plans include a new junior play area, additional shade and seating, greening and landscaping improvements, and the installation of a drinking fountain.
A City of Mitcham spokesperson said the new junior play area will be a space designed especially for younger children, with plenty of opportunities to climb, explore and play.
“The standout feature will be the treehouse play structure complete with two slides, rope climbing elements, wobble bridges and pommel climbers, giving kids the feeling of adventuring through the treetops,” they added.
“The playground will also include an all-abilities spinner, a parrot rocker and a range of swings including a basket swing, toddler swing and flat swing, so children of different ages and abilities can enjoy the space together.
“To make the area comfortable for families, the upgrade will also include a drinking fountain, new seating around the playground and shade sails over the swings and all-abilities spinner.”
The community’s strong feedback was also praised by the spokesperson.
“These upgrades reflect strong community feedback, particularly from families, requesting play equipment for younger children, more shade, seating and improved park amenities while maintaining the park’s natural character,” they said.
A traffic and pedestrian safety assessment will also be carried out around the playground area both before and after the upgrades are completed. If any improvements are recommended to further enhance safety, these will be presented to council for consideration.
The project is supported by a $200,000 Federal Government grant dedicated to the playground improvements, with the City of Mitcham contributing an additional $6,000 towards the works.
Once complete, the upgrades will provide a more accessible and enjoyable park for local families, offering a place for children to play and for the community to gather, while maintaining the relaxed, natural feel that has made Treetop Reserve a favourite neighbourhood spot.
