Crazy carts will be hurling through Willunga next week in the inaugural Mad Dash Billy Cart Race

The race will bring madness and frivolity to the streets of Willunga as a reminder to everyone to take life a little less seriously.

Ladies and gentlemen start your engines, or lack thereof, with the first-ever Mad Dash Billy Cart Race taking place next Sunday November 6th.

After COVID caused the initial event last year to be cancelled, event organisers are proud and excited to bring madness and frivolity to the streets of Willunga in a bid to bring a smile to faces and remind everyone to take life a little less seriously.

Not your average race, The Mad Dash is less about speed and more about daftness with teams encouraged to come up with the most entertaining costume, skit or cart design to bring laughter to onlookers. Set to be the silliest race in SA, teams will dance and sing their way down the track with the crossing of the finish line nothing but an added bonus.

The inaugural event kicks off at 10am with teams being judged in a variety of areas. Event organiser, Kath Rodgers, assure us that all entrants have put in hours of work behind the scenes to come up with the silliest vehicle designs – and a word to the wise, if you want to see the carts in all their glory, get down early to get a glimpse before the race because who knows what condition they will be in at the end!

“The brief for the entrants was ‘the dafter the entry, the better!’” says Kath.

The route taken by said billy carts is kept under strict secrecy however cryptic clues have been dropping on the Facebook page promising this track will be nothing but your run-of-the-mill trip down the road.

The Mad Dash is a small, not-for-profit organisation that relies on the support of the local community to make the event a success with all proceeds going towards local children’s charities to keep spreading the smiles long after the event has finished.

When: Sunday November 6th from 10am
Where: High Street, Willunga – The starting line will be placed outside the top pub
