If you’re getting married or engaged, choosing a wedding ring can be overwhelming. There’s plenty of factors to consider, and with a lifetime investment in your chosen piece/s at stake, it’s important to know what to look for.
To help make the process easier, we spoke with the team at multi award-winning jeweller DDS Diamond Design Studios (DDS), who shared the key elements to consider to help make the process easier, while ensuring you end up with the perfect rings.
As specialists in their field, DDS know what it takes to make an incredible engagement ring or wedding band.
DDS has taken out the title of ‘Best Diamond Ring Manufacturer in Australia’ at the Australian Bridal Industry Academy awards gala numerous times, earning their position as one of the leading ring designers in the country.
DDS and parent company Moser Jewellery have been winning awards since 1991 since entering the South Australian Goldsmiths Guild competition, where they won awards for ‘Excellence’ and ‘Craftsmanship.’
DDS founder and head designer Richard Moser, has shared 5 key factors to consider, to help determine what you should be looking for when deciding to purchase or design wedding jewellery.
Attention to Detail
Richard says DDS pays incredible attention to detail and takes great pride in producing custom-made products of the highest quality at the best possible price.
“Because we are responsible for our end product, it needs to be perfect. People expect more than what they would get from going to a mass-produced chain store, so we have a reputation of high quality, and that is what we need to aspire to,” Richard says.
“We pay attention to detail in every aspect of manufacturing the ring, beginning with finding the perfect stone, providing the nicest box we can, to a lifetime cleaning service, which is something that the average store doesn’t offer.”
Care during Manufacturing
Richard is passionate about hand-crafting each piece of jewellery to perfection, with all jewellery made in a private studio workshop in Burnside.
“We hand manufacture, which means the gold is nice and hard compared to the mass-market major retailers who have their rings mass produced internationally. We are less expensive than the retail stores because we are not putting on huge markups, and we’re sourcing everything as direct as we can,” he says.
“It is different to the normal shop arrangement; it’s more relaxed and it is more private and personal, and we only generally have one or two customers at a time, so they get our full attention.”
Quality of Materials
Richard says the quality of stones used in your ring makes a huge difference to the end product, and DDS uses very high-quality stones in their products, even down to the smallest stones.
“The metal we use is brand new metal which has been refined, we don’t use second-grade metals, so we are not cutting any corners. We want to make the highest quality product we can,” he says.
DDS also uses the highest palladium-rich, nickel free gold and the best quality Platinum in their manufactured pieces.
Working with Customers
Richard said working closely with customers is important to him, and you will walk out with a unique, custom-made ring, crafted exactly for you to add that personal touch and exclusivity.
“We have really no interest in selling someone something that they don’t absolutely want or love, therefore I try and design it in partnership with the customer, asking customers every step of the way ‘what do you think of this, compared to this?’ In the end they feel like they have designed the ring themselves, which for them is a thrill because they are really part of the ring we are making for them,” he says.
“From there we see the customers again for their matching wedding rings. Again, they don’t have to just choose off the shelf, so we design something specific to match their engagement ring, and/or exactly what they are looking for. We make sure it fits correctly, so the diamonds come to the same point as the engagement ring and the setting style is the same, so it really is that both the engagement and wedding rings are meant to be together.”
Credibility of the Business
It is important to ensure the quality behind the brand you’re purchasing your ring from. DDS has been designing and creating handmade engagement rings and jewellery in Adelaide for two generations, and is a family business with deep roots in the world of jewellery.
Richard’s passion for creating jewellery was passed down to him through generations. His family has manufactured jewellery for around 80 years, starting with his grandfather, to his father, and now him.
“We were quite well-known throughout the global jewellery industry for carving gemstones and manufacturing our jewellery brand called Moser Jewellery. I started DDS 20 years ago, and that really focuses on the Adelaide and Australian market, whereas Moser Jewellery was sold in many other countries,” he says.
