Less than a year after opening their first kitchen in St Agnes, the family behind The Tandoori Box has done something many hospitality newcomers only dream of. They’ve expanded.
The much-loved Indian takeaway, which quickly built a loyal following in Adelaide’s north-east for its no-frills approach to flavour, has officially opened a second location at Virginia Shopping Centre, bringing its full menu of curries, tandoori dishes and street-food favourites further north.
“Virginia, you’ve got a brand new local feed! The Tandoori Box has officially opened at Virginia Shopping Centre – same flavours you know from St Agnes, brand new home in the north,” the team announced on Facebook.
Behind the venue is Amarpal Kang, who spent more than a decade in kitchens before taking the leap and opening his own. The Tandoori Box was born from the belief that no one was doing truly authentic Indian food in the suburbs. Now, as of last month, we’re treated to two.

The tandoor remains central to Virginia’s offering, turning out smoky tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, lamb seekh kebabs and freshly baked naan, from classic garlic and butter to cheese-stuffed and chilli cheese variations. Curries range from mild and creamy butter chicken and kormas through to punchy Madras and Vindaloo, alongside goat, lamb and beef options that are cooked low and slow.
There’s also a broad spread of Indian street food and Indo-Chinese dishes, including samosas, onion bhaji, pani puri, Manchurian plates and chilli chicken, plus prawn, fish and paneer options. Many dishes are gluten free, and vegetarian and vegan diners are well catered for across the menu.
Health-minded regulars will recognise the protein bowls and curry bowls that helped build the St Agnes following, layering lemon rice, vegetables and either steamed or tandoori proteins, with lighter sauces and balanced portions.
The original St Agnes store quickly became a talking point online, with reviews flooding local community pages. One diner wrote, “Best Indian I have ever had by far!” while another summed it up with “OMFG. It’s amazing.” Others praised its consistency, generous portions and the fact that dishes tasted “home-style, not watered down.”
The Tandoori Box follows a simple motto – only serve food you’d be proud to take home. It’s an approach that’s clearly working, and now Virginia locals can impress their family next takeout night.
“Whether it’s a quick takeaway on the way home, a family feed, or a cheeky wrap run with the crew, we’ve got you covered,” the business shared.
