If you’ve travelled down King William Road in Hyde Park lately, you may have noticed the pink and white graphics adorning the front of shop 113.
What lies behind those blocked out windows, you ask?
Well, it’s Fish Out of Water’s, Kate Symons, latest delicious project, Cupkates Desserts.
Coming in the spring of 2021 will be Kate’s Cupkates Desserts, slinging homemade cupcakes and tantalizing desserts, including milkshakes, soft drinks, soft serve, scoop ice cream and fondue. The store will also house cooking classes that teach cupcake decorating.
You don’t have to wait until next year to sink your teeth into some of Kate’s sweet treats. CupKate Desserts are available at Fish Out of Water and has a strong online presence, currently available on UberEats, MenuLog and soon, DoorDash.
Kate, who is a qualified chef, started Cupkates Desserts by making small amounts of cupcakes from home. Things quickly changed for Kate, with the popularity and demand for her sweet treats skyrocketing.
Kate and her partner bought King William Road’s iconic fish and chip shop, Fish Out of Water, a few years back, and it sits just four doors down from the new dessert shop.
Kate has been making her cupcakes in the kitchen of Fish Out of Water with the help of her small team, one of whom used to be Kate’s cake teacher, ever since they bought the chippery.
“We are building the new kitchen and space to keep up with the demand,” says Kate.
So, what can you expect from Cupkates Desserts? Well they’ve got all your classics from jaffa cakes to caramel slices, as well as some new-age desserts.
“Everything we make is made from scratch with love. We’re bringing it back to the old school; all the classics made really, really well,” she explains.
Kate tells us that the most popular desserts have been their sticky date pudding and their cheesecakes.
