CupKates Desserts goes brick and mortar in Modbury

Popular pop-up CupKates Desserts has opened their first brick and mortar location, and they’re serving up a slew of sweet treats.

Westfield Tea Tree Plaza has just gotten a bit sweeter with the addition of this new cupcake and dessert shop.

Popular pop-up CupKates Desserts has opened their first brick and mortar location, and they’re serving up a slew of sweet treats. The new spot has 16 cupcake varieties that rotate on a regular basis––with fun favourites including Caramilk Hokey Pokey, s’more, and popcorn––as well as six types of cheesecake, sticky toffee puddings, sugar cookies, lemon meringue pie, and more.

The brand has been operating as a pop-up and commercial kitchen since 2018, but their brick and mortar location will have some new items, such as coffee, milkshakes, and soft serve and scoop ice cream.

CupKates Desserts was founded by couple Chris Thompson and Kate Symons out of their Hyde Park fish and chips restaurant Fish Out of Water, and they created a separate business when they outgrew the space. Now, the standalone dessert shop is serving up lots of sweet treats from their very own Westfield Tea Tree Plaza venue.

“Our goal with our desserts is to bring back the childhood favourites you can’t buy anymore,” Thompson says.

“We have what was popular when you were a kid brought back to life in the 21st century.”

CupKates Desserts is hosting their grand opening Saturday, June 4 with face painting and a balloon artist from 12pm to 2pm, special visits from Captain America and Ariel from The Little Mermaid, and balloon artists making ballon desserts.

Find them at Westfield Tea Tree Plaza, 576 North East Road, Modbury.
