Cuttlefish season commences with captivating guided snorkel tours

Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries will hold guided snorkel tours of the Giant Australian Cuttlefish mating season. See cuttlefish in all their glory this July.

The best season to see the ‘Chameleons of the sea’ is fast approaching.

Along with seeing this magnificent sea creature in all its glory, there will be a guided tour on offer to show you everything this anticipated yearly event holds.

Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries (EMS) will hold guided snorkel tours at Stony Point in the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park and swimmers will see the glorious Giant Australian Cuttlefish first hand.

The migration to the Whyalla waters is for the sole purpose of spawning every year between May and August.

Tens of thousands of these majestic creatures mate and reproduce and in the process create an amazing spectacle of underwater light shows and colourful kaleidoscopic displays.

Along with the cuttlefish show on offer, the reef they frequent is also home to a variety of colourful plant life, fish, sea lions, whales and dolphins.

Snorkelers will learn about their blue blood and see first hand the cuttlefish’s colourful mating rituals in a safe group environment.

Each tour will last up to 90 minutes.

This will include suiting up in the wetsuits, a cuttlefish behaviour breakdown along with a safety and equipment debriefing.

The tour is suitable for both adults and children that are five years and above and swim along with treading water.

Children under 15 years must be accompanied and supervised in water by an adult.

Commercial fishing almost destroyed this world class phenomenon, therefore the cuttlefish are protected during their breeding season between May and August, so don’t miss this chance to see them.

Available dates throughout July:

  • July 2-3
  • July 9-10
  • July 12-13
