Dance music pioneers Daft Punk disbanded three years ago, but their legacy is being carried with a one-night-only showing of the 2003 feature film that accompanied the band’s seminal record, Discovery.
The film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem will receive a special remaster for cinematic release. It will be premiered worldwide for the first time ever on ‘one night only’ on the 12th of December.
To make for an even more complete experience, the film will be followed by a collection of iconic music videos from high-profile directors including Spike Jonze and Roman Coppola.
Interstella 5555 tells the tale of a musical band of aliens kidnapped by a sinister human villain with evil intentions. It is accompanied by music from the French house duo, and was cut into individual music videos for the album Discovery.
Due to the animated film’s use in Daft Punk music videos, it is rare to see the film in its full form, particularly on display in a cinema setting.
The film was written by Daft Punk members Thomas Bangalter (the silver robot) and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (the gold robot), along with Cédric Hervet. It was directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi with supervision from legendary Japanese manga artist, Leiji Matsumoto.
Daft Punk broke the music world’s heart when they announced their retirement in early 2021, eight years after their final album, Random Access Memories. The secretive group released just four studio albums, three of which went multiple times platinum.
Since 2021, the band’s record label, Columbia, has put out drumless and 10th anniversary editions of their final album. Now, we’re lucky enough to see the duo’s earlier work in a remastered form on the big screen!
