Dan Murphy’s has opened its first drive-thru, Bottle-shop in South Australia.

Now customers will be able to stock up this Christmas without leaving the comfort of their car.

The drive-thru location which popped up in Glenelg over the weekend is a new small-format store, which comes with a full-service drive-thru.

Dan Murphy’s Glenelg offers customers a hyper-localised range, electronic shelf labels which can be tapped with smartphones to find out more about a product and a full-service drive-thru, where customers can enjoy an end-to-end shopping experience from the comfort of their car.

The expansion of store formats comes after the liquor giant started experimenting with the drive-thru format in Sydney last year.

Since then South Australian stores have begun offering a pick-up service but the expansion to the drive-thru is an exciting step for regular customers.

The new Glenelg outlet, adjacent to the Watermark Hotel on Anzac Highway, is just the second in the country to offer a “full service” where customers can either pick up an online purchase or order on arrival similar to traditional bottle shops attached to pubs.

Dan Murphy’s managing director Alex Freudmann said the expansion of drive-thru outlets is likely as the increasing demand from customers for convenience continued to surge.

“We know customers expect so much more from us than products on shelves, which is why we are increasingly innovating and using technology to create our stores of the future,” Alex Freudmann.

“Since Covid, customers are expecting more convenience and contactless shopping experiences in our stores, which is why we are looking at investing in drive-thrus,” he added.

“This drive-thru offers customers the ultimate convenience, as they can just drive in (remain in their car) and place an order with a team member and their drinks will then be delivered directly to their car boot within minutes, after RSA checks.”

The new small-format bottle shop at Glenelg has been converted from a former BWS store and is less than half the size of a traditional Dan Murphy’s store.

It also features electronic shelf labels which enable customers to tap the label with their smartphones to get more product information and read customer reviews.

Dan Murphy’s Glenelg has the retailer’s new flagship design and is the third store in South Australia to have electronic shelf labels so customers can see price changes – with price beats taking place daily – as well as customer ratings in real-time.

The electronic shelf labels also have NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, so drinks lovers can simply tap the shelf label with their smartphones to get more product information or read customer reviews about a specific product.

“ESL will help us communicate with shoppers in a new way, reduce paper usage and make our store teams more efficient,” Alex added.

Dan Murphy’s Glenelg will employ 20 locals in full-time and part-time roles.

This is the third small-format Dan Murphy’s store in the country.  Dan Murphy’s unveiled the doors to its first small-format store in Sydney’s Elanora Heights in December 2019, and Gold Coast’s Benowa in 2020.

Dan Murphy’s currently has ten South Australian locations with the newest being in Fulham Gardens, which is also the state’s second-largest Dan Murphy’s store on Tapleys Hill Rd.

It too offers a drive-thru service, but only for online pick-up orders.
