Legendary Australian artist Dan Sultan is set to join forces with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) for an exclusive performance at the Festival Theatre on Saturday, 14 December 2024. This unique collaboration will mark the close of ASO’s 2024 season, as well as the 10th anniversary of Sultan’s critically acclaimed album ‘Blackbird’.
The concert promises a striking evening of music, blending Sultan’s distinctive voice and style with the full orchestral sound of the ASO. Sultan’s involvement marks his first with the orchestra. “I’m so excited to be working with the ASO,” Sultan stated. “Putting this show together is all a bit of a dream and I can’t wait for us all to perform in Adelaide’s gorgeous Festival Theatre and treat local audiences to my many songs.”
The event will be conducted by Aaron Wyatt with orchestral arrangements by Alex Turley. Original artwork by Sultan’s longtime collaborator, Jarra Karalinar Steel, will be featured, adding to the musical experience with visual storytelling.
This collaboration follows Sultan’s recent celebrated performances at the NAIDOC festivities in Melbourne, where he earned multiple standing ovations.
The ‘Blackbird’ album, which fans will have the pleasure of experiencing anew through this orchestral partnership, has been described as recounting the “simple journey of a man singing about love, desire and identity.” It is revered as a quintessential Australian rock album—a rich tapestry of genres with elements of rock and roll, soul, country, and gospel.
ASO CEO Colin Cornish spoke about the importance of this partnership to not only the orchestra but also to the broader musical landscape of Adelaide. “We are thrilled our final performance of the year will be a powerful and memorable collaboration with the extraordinary Dan Sultan,” said Cornish. “This partnership marks a fitting close to our 2024 season and I cannot imagine a better way to close out an incredible year.”
