Dark Mofo co-founder appointed as new Adelaide Festival Centre CEO

Kate Gould, renowned for her leadership in the arts, is set to become the new CEO of Adelaide Festival Centre, succeeding Douglas Gautier AM in July 2025.

Adelaide Festival Centre Trust has officially announced the appointment of Kate Gould as its new CEO, set to begin her tenure in July 2025. Gould will replace Douglas Gautier AM, who will step down in June after a nearly two-decade-long career at the helm.

Kate Gould, known for her extensive expertise and leadership in the arts sector, is leaving her position as CEO and Artistic Director of Brisbane Powerhouse. Her previous roles have notably included co-founding and directing Hobart’s renowned winter arts festival, Dark Mofo, as well as serving as the executive director.

With over 30 years of experience in the arts industry, Gould has contributed significantly to the growth of cultural infrastructure and the creation of new festivals. Her impressive career has also included leadership roles such as CEO and Associate Artistic Director of Adelaide Festival. Additionally, she has held various board positions including Chair of Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Co-Chair of the SA Premier’s Council for Women and Director of Adelaide Football Club.

Kate Gould’s return to Adelaide marks a significant moment for Adelaide Festival Centre. Karlene Maywald, Chair of the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust shared, “Following an international search with enormous interest, we couldn’t be more delighted to secure Kate Gould’s return to Adelaide from the Powerhouse in Brisbane,” Maywald commented. She said Kate Gould’s track record of innovative and insightful leadership is expected to drive the next phase of artistic and commercial evolution for the Centre.

Gould said “I’m pleased to return to Adelaide to lead one of the nation’s great arts centres and festival producers.”

Outgoing CEO Douglas Gautier AM praised Gould’s appointment. “I congratulate Kate Gould on her appointment. I am delighted that someone with such significant arts experience and acumen has been appointed to lead this organisation with such a great team,” Gautier remarked.

Kate Gould will officially commence her five-year term on July 7, 2025, heralding a new chapter for Adelaide Festival Centre, which is poised for further redevelopment and innovation under her leadership.
