New comedy starring Steve Carell (The 40 year old Virgin) and Tina Fey (30 Rock) as married couple Phil and Claire Foster.  Afraid that their “date nights” have become a forced ritual and their marriage has no spark left they decide to spice things up with dinner at a trendy Manhattan bar.  With no reservation they decide to assume the identify of a “no show” reservation by the Tripplehorns.  In a case of mistaken identity their romantic night turns into a wild ride for their lives with encounters with Mafia and crooked cops.  Ray Liotta hams  it up as Mob boss Joe Miletto, reliving his former Goodfellas glory.  But the injokes dont stop there with Mark Wahlberg (Boogie Nights) appearing as a shirtless security specialist very much like his Calvin Klein ads and still looking fit!

Directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) like his previous work his action oriented focus shines through in Date Night.  The obligatory car chase scene is so imaginative and hilarious…the best I have seen in ages.  The gags keep rolling on in this romp and though there are a few flat spots at times overall its pretty entertaining at a short and sweet 88 minutes.  Its also worth hanging around for the credits with the usual outtakes providing some real gems.  Both Carell and Fey put in a good performance but I found it hard not to think of Sarah Palin, Fey’s doppelganger, as the similarity was quite disconcerting.  Fey may need to be careful in future in choosing her roles and how she looks to shake off that “Palin” tag.
