David Helfgott returns to bid farewell to his legion of loyal fans at Adelaide Town Hall on Sunday 11th August. David will be performing his favourite solo piano works of Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven’s heroic Appassionata sonata.
Born in Melbourne in 1947, David showed outstanding pianistic ability from a very young age. His studies in piano saw him move to London to study at the Royal College of Music, where his teachers described him as the most brilliant student in their 25 years of teaching. Towards the end of his time in London he faced many health battles which saw him hospitalised. Later in life David toured the world extensively performing in many notable locations. His life story was the centre of the 1996 Australian film, Shine, featuring Geoffrey Rush as David Helfgott.
In his upcoming concert, David shares some of the music so iconically connected with his amazing life of personal challenge and enormous success, always defined by his determination to find joy in every moment.
David continues to enchant audiences everywhere he plays with his remarkable technical and interpretative prowess. An extraordinary artist who receives worldwide recognition, David’s continuing success comes as no surprise to his devoted admirers everywhere. They have long regarded his recitals as transcending mere music-making, and as an affirmation of the tenacity of the human spirit and imagination.
