David Koch has been named the new Chair of the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC), effective from July 2nd this year.

With an extensive media career, Koch brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for SA to his new role. He currently serves as Executive Chairman of Pinstripe Media and has been the Chair of the Port Adelaide Football Club since 2012. Widely recognised as the former host of the Sunrise program on the Seven Network, where he spent over two decades, Koch’s influence and expertise in finance and media have made him a prominent figure in the industry.

As the Chair of SATC, Koch will collaborate with the Commission’s Board to set and guide the strategic agenda for South Australia’s tourism sector. The SATC operates as an independent statutory authority, and Koch’s leadership is expected to support its efforts in driving growth and innovation within the state’s tourism industry. He takes over from Andrew Bullock, who has been Chair since 2019.

South Australia’s tourism sector has strongly bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic, with recent data showing a significant increase in visitor spending. According to Tourism Research Australia, spending reached $10.1 billion in the December 2023 quarter, a 20% increase from $8 billion in the same quarter of 2019.

SA has hosted a remarkable events season, featuring the Santos Tour Down Under, Fringe and Adelaide Festivals, WOMADelaide, Gather Round, LIV Golf, and Tasting Australia presented by RAA Travel. Tomorrow night, the festivities continue with the CommBank Matildas playing at Adelaide Oval for the first time, facing China PR ahead of the Paris Olympics.

“Kochie is a well-known figure to all Australians and has always been tremendously passionate about his home State of South Australia,” Premier Peter Malinauskas says.
“I’d like to thank Andrew Bullock for his dedicated leadership of the SATC over the past five years.”

“We have so many advantages in South Australia that make us an ideal destination for holidaymakers,” Newly appointed Chair of SATC David Koch says.
“We do the best food and wine in the nation, and we have some of the nation’s most spectacular regions.
“We also retain a reputation for delivering first-class major events and festivals. More recently, the perceptions of Adelaide and South Australia have shifted significantly on the east coast and we have an opportunity to capitalise on this momentum to grow our tourism sector even further.
“I have a passion for small business so a particular focus of mine will be trying to help those in tourism to grow their business through innovation.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to Chair the South Australian Tourism Commission and I look forward to working with the Board and the SATC team to market our great State, grow our tourism sector, and support the many businesses that rely upon its success.
“Tourism is a huge economic generator and employer for any State which ultimately flows through to providing increased resources for other community services.”
