Inspired by the Brisbane based juggernaut that is Pub Choir(tm) – and a Kate Bush cover that went viral during 2022 – Adelaide local musician, performer and choir specialist Deborah Brennan wondered why Queenslanders should get all the fun and decided it was time to launch an Adelaide-own version. Unfortunately the wonderfully self-explanatory named Pub Choir was trademarked, so she had to get creative in naming her own knock-off version of the concept. Thus, Bootleg Choir was born and launched its premiere event as part of the 2023 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
The concept is simple: participants gather at a pub where they learn a popular song in three part harmony, following lyrics projected on screen. After an hour of singing and rehearsing, the group performs the song with a live band.
At Bootleg Choir everyone is welcome. No musical experience is necessary – all you need is a love for singing and a willingness to have a good time (and maybe a drop of Dutch courage for good measure!)
But the magic of Bootleg Choir goes beyond just the performance. It’s a chance for people from all walks of life to come together and have fun while connecting through the universal language of music. If you’ve ever been caught singing in the car or belting out The Horses with a pint in your hand, come on down to Bootleg Choir and be part of the singing meetup event where YOU are the star!
Join Deborah Brennan’s Bootleg Choir Tuesday May 30 at 7.30pm. Norwood Hotel (OTFC), 97 The Parade, Norwood. Tickets from $20, and can be purchased at https://www.deborahbrennan.com.au/bootlegchoir
