Design Festival 2011 Calling For Competition Entries

Adelaide City Council and the New Architects and Graduates group (NAG) formed an ongoing partnership two years ago in order to rethink the way public space is used in Adelaide. A key element of this partnership is a design competition, which will display and promote emerging design talent.

Design Festival 2011 is calling for entries from teams made up of at least one designer and one artist to create a permanent large scale structure that demonstrates the Design Festival brand:  fun, vibrant, dynamic and active.

Council has allocated $100,000 towards the creation of the winning structure, which will form part of the revitalisation of the former SA Water depot site in Thebarton. This is a significant project that will return the site to the Adelaide Park Lands and deliver a contemporary urban forest using indigenous plants, based on sustainable landscaping principles.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said, “This is an important partnership for Council and I look forward to seeing the creativity that will enhance our urban spaces.”

Let’s not be afraid of a bit of controversy. This is a great opportunity for designers to provoke the public, connect communities and generate questions and ideas about Adelaide’s future.”

Austral Bricks is also a proud supporter and major sponsor of the Design Festival and prides itself on supporting South Australia’s up and coming architectural talent. Austral Bricks has grown to be one of the leading producers of building products in SA and understands the importance of supporting the future of our state.

Entries in the Festival will be judged by a panel of designers and representatives from the Adelaide City Council, City Design, NAG, Australian Institute of Architect, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and the Integrated Design Commission.

NAG Chair and SA Emerging Architects and Graduates Network Representative Mark Berlangieri  said, “If you can pull together a team made up of at least one designer and one artist and have strong ideas about how South Australia’s capital city could improve its public spaces, this is your chance to be heard.”
