Diabetic-friendly Six Shillings Cafe opens in Adelaide’s North

Welcome to Six Shillings, a unique cafe where delicious food meets thoughtful dietary considerations.

Welcome to Six Shillings, a unique cafe where delicious food meets thoughtful dietary considerations. Driven by a passion for inclusivity, the owner, a Type 1 diabetic, has crafted a menu that caters not only to those with dietary restrictions but also delights the taste buds of all diners to create a welcoming space where everyone can enjoy great meals.

Six Shillings is the brainchild and dream of now-cafe owner, Siborne (Sib) Lanagan, who started her business ventures as a coffee cart.

“I always wanted my own business, I’ve been working in hospitality my whole adult life and now I finally get to follow my dream with the new brick and mortar,” Sib said.

The coffee selection by SA roaster Sicilia Coffee is a highlight and for those seeking a cool treat, the cafe offers a range of iced drinks, including blended shakes topped with whipped cream, available in flavours like coffee, chocolate, and strawberry with fun sprinkles for the kids.

The menu also includes a tempting array of toasties and focaccias all made with local ingredients.

Made fresh each morning, the Chicken Focaccia, loaded with chicken, avocado, sun-dried tomato, and cheese, is a fan fav at just $10. Vegetarian options like the Grilled Veggie Focaccia offer a delicious mix of grilled eggplant and marinated capsicum.

Meanwhile Sib says she can’t get enough of the salami!

Breakfast favourites include the hearty Brekky Roll, featuring bacon, egg, and cheese and a BLAT (Bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado)

On the menu, you’ll notice all dishes also list the carb count. That’s to help Type 1 diabetic’s to make a choice without having to “guesstimate”, according to Sib.

“It’s important to me as a diabetic to create a place that didn’t exclude anybody from a good feed,” she said.

Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a leisurely meal, Six Shillings provides a friendly atmosphere and a menu that celebrates both taste and sustainability.

“We’ve had overwhelming positive feedback since opening a month ago, especially when people say the food is so fresh, that means a lot because it’s all freshly-made,” Sib said.

With expertly brewed coffees and specialty beverages to complement your meal, this charming cafe is the perfect destination for everyone, making it easy to enjoy great food while being mindful of dietary choices.
