Newly opened Good Neighbour Deli in Lot Fourteen is reviving the iconic SA Double Cut Roll

“A “double cut roll” originates from Adelaide corner shops as a delightful sandwich that slices a roll into four slices, forming ‘two sandwiches’ from one roll.” Now available at the Good Neighbour Deli…

Double cut roll lovers are now rejoicing and skipping through the street to the Bice Building at Lot Fourteen to the newly opened Good Neighbour Deli.

It just opened its door two weeks ago, making the double Cut Roll the king of its healthy menu.

They’ve sold hundreds to hungry Gen Xs and boomers wanting to relive the nostalgia of this South Australian institution.

Funny that it was just the other week that I was having a discussion with a couple of millennials and my 16-year-old daughter about the delicious joy of the South Australian invention “The Double Cut Roll”.

What astounded me at first was they had no idea what I was going on about, one piped up “isn’t that just a roll cut in half the in halves again?” “No, that’s a roll cut into quarters,” I said.

“It was a magical double filling roll with two cuts through the roll. Every school tuck shop and corner deli would sell and make them fresh. And whatever money we had left went to mixed lollies.” I added.

So, all three millennials went straight to their phones to figure what the heck I was on about. And there it was in all its Google Glory…

From our own SA Masterchef Adam Liaw “A “double cut roll” originates from Adelaide corner shops as a delightful sandwich that slices a roll into four slices, forming ‘two sandwiches’ from one roll.”

It was a definitely a South Australian thing… You could have one set of topping on the top half with something completely different on the bottom. If you look hard enough in the suburbs you might find an old deli still dedicated to the art of the double cut roll.

But we reckon, you’d be hard pressed to find a double cut roll anywhere else in Australia. Now, it’s available just at your doorstep in the centre of the CBD.

Good Neighbour Deli

Owner Brett Hick-Maitland, self-proclaimed double cut roll lover, says Good Neighbour Deli has received such amazing feedback, and believed that Good Neighbour Deli will complement the district’s existing offering.

The most favourite item so far is;

DCR – The OG Double Cut Roll with, double le ham, double smoked cheddar, double cucumber, double shredded iceberg lettuce, double tomato, double mayo on white or wholemeal roll.

“But you can get creative with all our menu items, rolls, sandwiches, salads, warps and toasties.”

“Oh, and we’ve also brought another favourite of ours back… the Vienna Coffee with whipped cream heaven,” said Brett.

Servicing Lot Fourteen’s burgeoning population, as well as the general public, the new deli reflects the innovation district’s wellness credentials.

Good Neighbour Deli has a strong focus on South Australian produce, offering takeaway sumptuous small bites, brekky and lunch; together with coffees and an array of healthy smoothies and cold drinks.

Lot Fourteen State Project Lead, Di Dixon, says, “we’re excited about the opening of our second retail offering. Lot Fourteen really provides a unique atmosphere where all are welcome and where you might order a chia pudding or fresh sandwich while standing next to a space flight director, a catastrophe modeller or a rocket scientist.”
