Discover a unique melting pot of music and arts at MUSIC MATTERS festival this November

If you’ve ever sung in the shower and thought to yourself, “Hey, maybe I am musical after all”, then this festival is for you.

Just in time for summer, a diverse music and arts festival kicks off in Port Adelaide this Friday the 15th of November, featuring three weekends of fabulous arts events to take you through to the first of December. The inaugural MUSIC MATTERS festival is set to bring The Harts Mill Packing Shed to life with music, projection and dance workshops set against an exhibition of 90 incredible pieces from 23 of Adelaide’s most talented visual artists.

The idea behind the event is to highlight the importance of local knowledge, “the story of our places”, and reflections about “past, present and future uses”. Regardless of age or musical ability, this festival embraces inclusivity with a community-based focus on enriching musical experiences. The project’s development over three weekends opens the door for musical and educational development, as participants are encouraged to innovate, collaborate, and create in new and alternative ways.

Each weekend, an alluring variety of live music, workshops, songwriting programs, and visual projections will invite participants to uncover hidden talents and experience the thrills of creativity and performance. The primary goals of MUSIC MATTERS is to:

  •  Provide artists and musicians outside the commercial mainstream an opportunity to present their work over 3 weekends.
  • Create entry points for the wider community to be involved, not just as passive spectators but as active, workshop participants and performers.
  • Foster a relationship between visual artists, musicians and performers.

The full program of workshops includes free Citizen’s Orchestra lessons with renowned Adelaide musician Mat Morison, choir workshops with Ella Pak Poy, Anthony Pak Boy, and Pat Rix, and songwriting lessons with Kelly Menhennett. You can also learn live image projection with Nic Mollison, or “monster making” with local crafts expert Naomi Nomespotter.

Even if the extent of your musical experience is playing the spoons at a BBQ or learning the recorder in primary school, you’re qualified!

And if there’s a musical instrument that’s been stowed away in your cupboard for longer than you can remember, it’s time to wipe the dust off and join the band at MUSIC MATTERS for a fantastic opportunity to create and perform with a whole bunch of new friends.
