Discover Adelaide’s sweetest autumn adventure and pick your own apples at Lenswood

Lenswood’s pick-your-own orchard is the ultimate autumn family day out, with fresh apples, farmyard fun, and a taste of country hospitality just a short drive from Adelaide.

Autumn is in full swing here in Adelaide, and with school holidays well underway, it’s the perfect time to head through the hills. One activity that should be on every autumn itinerary in the hills is apple picking at Lenswood, where you can pick your own apples. This is the ultimate hands-on family day out that’s packed with charm, character, and plenty of good old-fashioned country hospitality.

Husband-and-wife duo, Chris and Emily Shipway, run the Lenswood pick-your-own orchard, which is open every day during the school holidays, and from Wednesday to Sunday once term starts again. Here you can pick apples of all varieties straight from the trees.

April is a great time to pick apples, with Granny Smith, Fuji, and Golden Delicious ripe for the taking, and Pink Lady apples expected to hit their peak soon. If you’ve been meaning to visit, now’s the time, as the apple-picking season is set to wrap up by mid to late May.

When you’re there, all you have to do is pay the small entry fee, then pick to your heart’s content! The more you pick, the less you pay, but as a guide, 0kg to 5kg costs $5 per kg, 5kg to 10kg costs $4.50 per kg and 10kg or more costs $4.00 per kg.

If you’re thinking of taking the family, there’s plenty more to explore beyond the fruit trees too. Young adventurers can join the free Pomology Trail, where they’ll don a mini vest, learn all about how apples are grown, and earn a certificate at the end. The orchard also features five vintage tractors perfect for climbing and exploring, plus a giant sandpit for little ones to enjoy.

When it’s time for a break, the on-site Humble Farm Cafe serves up locally baked goodies and ice cream from Stirling’s Hokey Pokey Ice Cream Shop.

Lenswood Pick Your Own will also be open on ANZAC Day, donating $1 from every kilo of apples sold to the Lobethal RSL and hosting a charity sausage sizzle. Since opening, they’ve raised an impressive $9,215 for the cause.

So while there’s still time, grab your gumboots and gather the family for this fantastic day out!
