Discover garden parties, champagne breakfasts & moonlight cinemas in the Riverland this spring

The Riverland is celebrating spring with two of our favourite things: flowers and wine. Discover the region’s Rose Festival and Small Winemakers Showcase.

As Spring begins to bloom and dormant plants defrost, new seedlings will sprout, and hibernating animals welcome a new season. In a similar fashion, South Australians are also thawing from the winter with two of our favourite things: flowers and wine.

There’s nothing quite like the pleasantly warm rays of the sun to reheat our winter-chilled cheeks, complimented by the sweetness of wine and the aromas of blossoming blooms. Fittingly, the Riverland is hosting two special events that showcase the regions stunning gardens and talented, small-scale winemakers.

From Friday 14 to Sunday 23 October, the Riverland will come alive with its annual Rose and Garden Festival. The festival is composed of numerous open gardens, carefully pruned and curated by passionate gardeners across the Riverland.

In addition, the Rose and Garden Festival encapsulates the region’s variety of garden fairs that kick off at this time of year, including the Waikerie Flower Show, The Pines Garden Fair, and Rose Festival Art Trial.

To launch the Riverland’s Rose and Garden Festival, festivities will begin with a 5-course degustation dinner, hosted by Eleni’s Restaurant at Mallee Estate.

The night will commence with bubbles and canapés on the Estate lawn, before entering the “Whimsical Garden Party”, where guests are invited to dress in their favourite pastels and floral prints.

Coinciding with the 2022 World Federation of Rose Societies World Rose Convention, Federation President Henrianne de Briey will be the honoured guest at the opening night dinner, as well as the first festival fair on Saturday 15 October.

While the gorgeous floral festival will be a feast for the senses, there will also be plenty of activities to participate in too! From flower arranging and art, to karaoke and bingo, there will be plenty to attract city slickers to the picturesque towns of the Riverland.

From Friday 21 October to Sunday 23 October, tourists and locals will also be able to enjoy the 2022 Riverland Small Winemakers Showcase: the region’s very own food and wine festival.

Seven small-scale winemakers have opened their doors to host a program of events, commencing with a moonlight cinema & cocktail night at Top Block Wines. Throughout the long weekend, you’ll also be able to find live music experiences, food trucks, karaoke nights, and a champagne breakfast at the Riverland Wine Centre.

The band of winemakers – including Top Block Wines, 919 Wines, Bassham Wines, Whistling Kite Wines and Oak Works Wines (Wonuarra) – encourage travellers to “stay and play”, recommending luxury transport and accommodation options. There’s even a Waikerie-based food company, Illalangi Gourmet Foods, that will make takeaway charcuterie platters for passing travellers, as they meander their way through to various picnic events.

So put a little spring into your step, a little wine in your glass, and stop to smell the flowers, because the Riverland is really set to blossom this season.
