A new gin label called Square1 has been launched by Balhannah-based distillers, coinciding with the release of three unique flavour profiles that pay homage to their humble goal of creating their own perfect gin.

Founders of Square1 and old friends Samuel Brown and Rob Watt, were great mates in Adelaide and continued that relationship in Hong Kong when they found themselves there for work in the noughties.

They joked that they would one day make the ‘perfect gin’, and now they they’re both back living in SA, that day has arrived.

The duo have described enjoying a gin in Hong Kong as a “national pastime” and wanted to bring that same attitude to Adelaide.

Rob Watt & Samuel Brown

“When the pandemic brought us back to Adelaide, we called each other’s bluff and resolved to make the best gin we could possibly make. We became experts in experimentation by the time we were happy with our recipes.

“Our story over the last two years is the origin behind the name of our gins. We had established careers in Hong Kong and we both decided to head back to square one. This meant returning home, which is naturally where we began so many years ago.

After 250 attempts to perfect their own gin, the first Square1 recipe was perfected.

The friends both ran their own companies in Hong Kong and when they found out their common interest was distilling, their quest to create their own perfect gin began.

“We wanted to open something in the Adelaide Hills because of its reputation for quality. It aligned perfectly with our values.

“Our ethos is keeping everything local, sourcing everything we can from the hills.

“We’re using the rare and unusual red juniper in one of our gins, which gives it a wonderful fruity note along with the typical spicy juniper finish.

“Our dry gins can be enjoyed a martini or neat, while our other gins are terrific mixed with tonic – but do the gin a favour and only pair it with good quality tonic.

The three gins available from end of April are the Unrind Citrus Gin, Sea Legs Navy Gin, and Big Red Dry Gin, with more products on the way.

Square1 is available from soon to open Rout 9 Distillery located at Unit 2E Balhannah Village- 37 Onkaparinga Valley Road Balhannah, specialty bottle shops and online.
