One of 12 South Australian gin distilleries featured in a calendar celebrating canine members of distillery families has taken out top honours in this year’s Australian Distilled Spirits Awards.

Never Never Distilling Co (whose resident dog, Ringo, posed for the calendar’s February page) won four awards for its gins, including Gold for its Southern Strength Gin.

The McLaren Vale distillery – named Champion Australian Distiller for 2020 – is among five South Australian distilleries featured in the inaugural Distillery Dogs calendar to win awards in the national competition, run by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria. The other four are Prohibition Liquor Co, Imperial Measures Distilling, Applewood Distillery and Seppeltsfield Road Distilling.

Sales of the Distillery Dogs calendar (launched in October) are raising funds for animals in need, with 50% of profits going to RSPCA South Australia.

To celebrate its Australian Champion Distiller award, Never Never Distilling Co is giving people who purchase a calendar online in the next 7 days the chance to win a mixed 3-pack of gins (see details below).

Head Distiller and Co-Founder at Never Never Distilling Co, Tim Boast, described the RSPCA as “an integral part of the Australian spirit”.

“Earlier this year, we saw the tremendous work RSPCA volunteers did across the whole country supporting animals and communities in need following the bushfires,” Tim said.

“When the opportunity to support the Distillery Dogs Calendar came up, Ringo and I leapt at it.”

According to RSPCA South Australia’s Fundraising Coordinator Gemma Weedall, whose love of dogs and appreciation of gin led to the calendar, her bias for South Australian gins has been well vindicated by the judges.

“It’s wonderful to see almost half the distilleries that star in this calendar also star in these award results,” Ms Weedall said.

“I doubt that I’m alone in finding the companionship of dogs and the occasional gin and tonic a handy combination for coping with this challenging year.

“With Christmas just three weeks away, the 2021 Distillery Dogs calendar makes an ideal gift that will bring smiles to recipients and some much needed funds for the 600 plus animals in RSPCA’s care this
festive season.”
