Pelican Productions is taking a magical journey ‘under the sea’ these school holidays when they present The Little Mermaid Jr from 24-27 April and they want you to come along for the ride!

The Little Mermaid Jr takes place in a kingdom far beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above.

But first she’ll have to defy her father – the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice.

For the past 10 years, Directors Kylie Green and Jen Frith have been giving Adelaide students the chance to sing and dance in their summer-holiday music theatre camps.

“We produced our first full-scale musical – Grease – last year, and it was so much fun that we just couldn’t resist bringing another big show to the stage this year,” said Ms Green.

“With the popular Disney film The Little Mermaid celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and given our love of a great sing-a-long, it seemed like the perfect fit to perform this underwater adventure.”

With a collective cast of 100 students, Pelican Productions have split their cast into two – with a junior cast (8-13 years old) and a senior cast (13-19 years old) performing their own shows.

“Having two separate casts for our productions works really well because there’s so much talent in Adelaide and by doing it this way it means everyone gets their chance to shine,” said Ms Frith.

“The show features all of the songs from the Academy Award winning film, like ‘Under the Sea’, ‘Part of Your World’ and ‘Kiss the Girl’ – plus there’s three new songs from the Broadway show. So all together it makes for a pretty special production.”

Pelican Productions is also thrilled to have Adelaide’s own The Voice Australia contestant Mark Stefanoff on board as choreographer this year.

“Mark was actually a student in our musical theatre camp back in 2007 and I think he’s been singing and dancing ever since,” said Ms Green.

“We are so proud of everything he’s achieved, especially having the courage to travel to the home of music theatre, Broadway in New York City, to study with the best in the business. But most of all, we’re glad he’s home in Adelaide to teach our kids all of his best dance moves!”

The Little Mermaid Jr will be performed at Walford College Theatre, 316 Unley Road, Hyde Park.
