Dolphin’s Next Birthday Under Cloud

On Wednesday, Ali the Port river dolphin, celebrated a milestone, her first birthday. She was given little hope of survival after her Mother, Millie, died last October from unknown causes.

Port River dolphin experts deemed Millie’s death to be detrimental to Ali’s health, as female dolphins will often stay with their mothers for life. Ali had beaten the odds to overcome life’s hardships.

However Ali’s life may soon be under threat again with the Greens backing Labor’s decision to lease out large portions of the Torrens Island for heavy industrial development.

The Greens have back flipped and will preference Labor over Independent Candidate, (after originally issuing a split ticket) and strident opponent of Torrens Island industrial development, Gary Johanson, in the Port Adelaide By-Election.

This is despite the possibility of heritage sites including the old Quarantine Station, natural habitat, fish breeding areas, mangroves and the world famous Port River Dolphin Sanctuary being damaged as a result of the development.

In a bid to ensure Ali will reach her second birthday in the Port River, Independent Johanson is trying to stop the development from going ahead.

“The Dolphin Sanctuary is embraced by Torrens Island and the fish breeding area as well as the mangroves surrounding the island and are very much at risk as a result of the development. The development will could see the pristine sections of natural environment destroyed forever by heavy industrial infrastructure.”

“The fate of the Port River dolphins may rest on the outcome of the Port Adelaide By-Election,” Mr Johanson said.
