A stunning three-metre-long glass sculpture by world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly will become a permanent part of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, thanks to the generous philanthropy of Dr. Pamela Wall OAM.
The artwork, titled ‘Glacier Ice and Lapis Chandelier’, was specially designed by Chihuly for the Palm House in the Botanic Garden.
Dr. Wall’s philanthropic purchase means that the piece will remain on display long after the Chihuly in the Botanic Garden exhibition wraps up in April 2025, allowing visitors to enjoy it for years to come.
The chandelier has become a crowd favourite since the exhibition started in September 2023, which is open every day with free daytime entry.
It’s one of more than a dozen spectacular glass installations featured in the exhibition, which has attracted record-breaking crowds from across Australia and around the world, and is a first for the Southern Hemisphere.
“As someone who has cherished and supported the arts and nature throughout my life it fills me with immense pleasure to support the acquisition of such an awe-inspiring glass chandelier made specifically by Dale Chihuly for the Palm House in the Adelaide Botanic Garden,” Dr Pamela Wall OAM said.
“This beautiful piece of art will provide enjoyment for visitors to the Gardens into the future.”
The chandelier is a masterpiece, carefully made by Chihuly and his studio team to go with the Palm House’s historic architecture and bright blue tones.
Visitors can see its beauty during the day and also during the Chihuly Nights – a ticketed evening event where the artworks are illuminated, creating a magical play of light and colour.
“Australia – and Adelaide – have held a special place in my heart since I visited and presented my work there in the 1990s and again in 2000,” Artist Dale Chihuly said.
“I’m thrilled to remain connected to this special place and these historic gardens through this acquisition.”
