A major new flagship store is set to open in regional South Australia, promising to reinvigorate a long-vacant site and deliver a fresh, locally-focused shopping experience.
Drakes Supermarkets has just announced the new store will be located in Mount Gambier’s CBD, breathing new life into the former Coles site.

Working alongside Leyton Property, Drakes is set to completely transform the site, turning it into a vibrant, modern shopping destination. The project will also deliver a major boost to the local economy, creating more than 150 new jobs across the region.
While the opening marks an exciting expansion for the supermarket chain, it’s also a deeply personal milestone for Drakes Managing Director, Roger Drake.
More than 50 years ago, Roger managed this very store back when it was a Coles, before leaving to open his own business. Fast forward five decades, and he’s returning to the same site—only this time, it’s his name on the door.
“It’s a full circle moment for me,” Roger says.
“I was once told I’d never make it in this industry. Coming back to revive this store for the Mount Gambier community is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

Shoppers can expect more than just the usual supermarket offerings. The new store will feature a huge range of fresh produce, a premium meat selection, a full-service deli with freshly sliced meats, and products handpicked to suit the Mount Gambier community.
Plus, Drakes is rolling out its popular innovations like The Little Kitchen, serving up hot meals and salads made to order, and a café wall for those quick coffee and snack runs.
“South Australia doesn’t just end at Adelaide, and the Blue Lake City has been neglected for far too long,” says Director John-Paul “JP” Drake.
“We’ve heard the people loud and clear and we’re excited to be bringing the Drakes offer to Mount Gambier.”
JP adds, “I’m so happy Coles told Dad he would never make it in this very store.”
“Amazing what some hard work and support from the people around you can do. We’re looking forward to getting that support from the people of Mount Gambier and becoming a part of the local community.”
With a long-standing commitment to keeping things local, Drakes is all about giving back.
“We have a proud history and commitment to reinvesting our profits back into the state and communities in which we live and operate,” says Roger.
The store is set to open in late 2025.
