If you’re looking for somewhere to spend your evenings, with wine in hand and stunning views… then look no further. We have the guide just for you!
So where should you go to get as close to heaven as possible? We’ve put together a list of Adelaide’s rooftop bars to help you head for the clouds.
2KW You may have noticed it’s at the top of so many of our lists (guys, they’re alphabetical!) but this innovative spot really shook up the Adelaide scene when it opened its doors. Gloriously glamorous (with a dress code to match, so tuck in your shirts lads) this spot has spectacular views of the city. It’s best for those lazy afternoon nibbles and cocktails that turn into nights filled with friends, wine and laughter. The 2KW team added some mighty fine heating and clear blinds to shelter you from the weather, but not hinder your view on those cooler evenings.
Benny’s American Takeaway No doubt a low key addition to this guide, Benny’s on Hindley Street does have a low key rooftop, clad with lights, stools and barrel style tables, the sort that you could easily scoff down a few burgers over (and a few cocktails, they do them well).
Cathedral Hotel This rooftop beer garden has a chic yet relaxed vibe. You can grab a wood oven pizza and warm up next to the beautiful fire if you’re feeling the chill. The view of St Peter’s Cathedral draws most of your attention and is particularly stunning at night; however you can see glimmers of the River Torrens and stunning Adelaide Oval too. The perfect spot to head pre or post sporting event, to celebrate or perhaps drown your sorrows.
The Gallery An old fave. Well really, it’s not that old, but who can work out time scales when there’s something new opening every second day? What we know is The Gallery delivers, time and time again. Aptly named from the beautiful art gallery displaying on levels one and two, the real piece de resistance is on level three. The theme is garden collides with city. Their lush green wall contrasts against the pretty night lights and sleek inner city architecture. Top this all off with an exceptional menu that caters for all – $10 pizzas with the purchase of a drink every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday right now! It’s perfect for afterwork drinks and nibbles or a casual but classy date night.
Kent Town Hotel Formerly known as The Tap Inn, this place has taken on a whole new life! Even though the beloved indoor driving range has gone, this pub is still all about fun. You can dine downstairs in the Jungle themed restaurant or enjoy a light and airy experience up at ‘Rooftop on Rundle.’ They have 30 craft beers on tap and all day dining. There’s also a Rooftop Dunk Tank which is available to hire for charity and fundraising (and sure to provide a lot of laughs for onlookers!).
(Kent Town Hotel is currently closed for renovations until early 2021, including the Jungle Bar & Bistro)
Majestic Roof Garden Hotel Name says it all really doesn’t it? Well not quite. This is only an honourable mention because the rooftop space is only available for functions at present. But head to their page to check out the stunning functions they’ve hosted and tell us you aren’t fantasising about a rooftop wedding!
Nineteen Ten Mr. Minksy’s Speakeasy Bar This is still a relatively new Adelaide’s rooftop bar, which its doors on Hindley Street. The indoor/outdoor bar is packed with heaters to keep you warm, a swimming pool, because why not, and a stage for band, burlesque and occasional fire performances. There’s a piano for the jazz bands, and a full stocked bar (of course) with an upcoming spring menu. Definitely one to check out.
The Mayfair Hotel Hennessy Lounge The Hennessy Lounge atop the incredible Mayfair Hotel has been renovated to cater for the weather, and now has an all-weather roof, and heaters. Now we know what you’re thinking but the lounge will not be sponsored by the infamous Cognac; the name is actually that of the heritage building’s original architect. The panoramic views of Rundle Mall will contrast against the sight of the Adelaide Hills, all while you’re sipping a champagne.
Proof Not quite a rooftop bar, but not quite not.. Up the stairs of this small bar off Waymouth St you’ll find a sky open area where you can gaze down at passers-by or up at the stars while enjoying one of Adelaide’s best toasties and a solid cocktail (or 5, we’re not judging). You’ll find Proof down Antser St just around the corner from its big sister, Press*.
Rocket Rooftop For those who like to really party. Hindley Street is host to several of Adelaide’s hottest clubs all stacked on top of each other. Both a club with a rotating roster of cool acts, once you’re in the rooftop is free, if a long line isn’t a deterrent.
(Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Rocket is currently closed but keep an eye out on their Facebook page for updates)
Sparkke at the Whitmore An exciting new female-led brew bar and food experience to the large rooftop space poised above the leafy green trees of Whitmore Square, just in time for summer enjoyment. Sparkke at the Whitmore have launched their rooftop bar, fitting over 200 people, making it the largest capacity rooftop bar in Adelaide (and where the party is going to be).
The Unley One of our favourite pubs that is 100% doing it right. They opened a rooftop bar in the middle of winter some time ago, and yet, still nailed it. We love how light and bright this venue has become, making you feel like it’s spring all year round. They’ve also got an excellent menu that combines lux-pub grub with fancy bites. We love it for lazy weekend drinks but beware: the fabulous vibe means an arvo session here could easily be the start of a large night.
West This fresh rooftop bar in Henley Beach, and let’s just say, it is something else. The 70-seat venue takes its design cues from some of the older Henley houses, with an art deco feel. An island bar with a giant timber bar top is the focal point. By the beach, lovely drinks and snacks on offer and a view like no other… this is one spot you’ll have to check out ASAP. They are always updating their menus as seasons change, so make sure you don’t miss out.
