A new event is coming to the city this winter supporting the farmers doing it tough.
The first-ever Drought Breaker Lunch will take over the Adelaide Showground on Friday, July 18th, bringing an afternoon of incredible food, connection and generosity. Hosted by the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA, in partnership with Rural Aid and Rural Business Support, every dollar raised will go directly to farming families across South Australia still battling drought, and supporting them with mental health services, emergency assistance and long-term wellbeing programs.
The day will feature a premium menu, heartfelt stories from those on the land, and a live auction packed with exclusive items and once-in-a-lifetime experiences donated by icons like RM Williams, Elders, Thomas Foods International, and the South Australian Cricket Association.
Among those sharing their story are livestock farmers Jodi and Shane Cuffe, who’ve been doing it tough near Quorn in the Flinders Ranges. “The land is tired, the animals are struggling, and so are we. Things are really tough right now,” shared Jodi.
“We’re destocking as we have no feed. We are trying to hold on to what’s left, feeding them hay and pellets – just hoping to keep them going as long as we can. Without Rural Aid, we honestly don’t know how we’d cope. They’ve not only helped us by donating top-quality hay, but they’ve also placed a counsellor right here in our community – someone who understands exactly what we’re going through.
“We’re proud to be speaking at the Drought Breaker event, not just for ourselves, but for every struggling farming family across South Australia. We’re here to echo the voice of the land – to say, we need support, and we need it now.”
With Rural Aid marking ten years of supporting Aussie farmers with mental health support, water deliveries and hay drops, and Rural Business Support offering free financial counselling, this event is a chance to give back to those who give so much and often go without.
RA&HS CEO, Will Rayner said, “The Society has been supporting South Australian rural and regional communities for more than 185 years.
“We felt that it was important to provide both financial and emotional support to farming communities who are experiencing what is, in many cases, the worst drought we have seen over that period.
“We really encourage corporate South Australia to rally behind this important cause and help to provide support where it is needed most.”
So if you’ve been looking for an excuse to bring some friends or family together for a good cause, grab a ticket, dust off the boots (or don your best city chic), and be part of a cause that truly counts.
