The stage is set for the Dunstan by-election, with the date officially announced for March 23rd. This crucial vote comes in the wake of former South Australian Premier Steven Marshall’s decision to retire from state parliament, closing a chapter on a 14-year journey of leadership and service.
Steven Marshall, reflecting on his tenure, shared, “It has been an honor to be the Member for Dunstan, Leader of the South Australian Liberal Party, and Premier of South Australia.” His departure not only leaves big shoes to fill but also marks a pivotal moment for the electorate of Dunstan as they gear up to choose a new representative.
Marshall’s leadership, particularly through the trials of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been a point of pride. He commended the collective effort and quick response that “saved thousands of lives,” extending thanks to notable figures such as Stephen Wade, Grant Stevens, and Nicola Spurrier for their critical roles during the crisis.
Beyond the pandemic, Marshall highlighted his government’s economic contributions, emphasizing advancements in key sectors like space, defence, and renewable energy. He believes these efforts have set South Australia on a path to a new age of prosperity.
As Marshall looks forward to more family time, especially with his children Charlie and Georgie, the focus shifts to the upcoming by-election. Opposition Leader David Speirs acknowledged Marshall’s impact, noting the by-election as an opportunity for the Liberal Party to introduce fresh leadership committed to addressing key issues like health and the cost of living.
