DVD Review: Bang Gang

A graphic & controversial depiction of teenage sexuality. A group of high school students begin an orgy club which will change their lives in unexpected ways.

Bang Gang plunges you into the depths of teenage sexuality. Controversial and undeniably erotic, you find yourself wanting to turn it off, yet strangely unable to. It features graphic depictions of teenage orgies abounding with plenty of drugs and alcohol

The mesh of storylines begins with best friends, George and Laetitia, and two of their male schoolmates, Alex and Nikita. Mind games soon develop between Alex and George and, feeling spurned, George decides on an unusual way to make Alex jealous. She organises an informal program of orgies after school that, before long, take on a life beyond what she had hoped.

It isn’t long of course before things start to go wrong. It is how these teenagers manage their lives after a health scare that saves the film from a banal ending and rethinks how relationships can change and take unexpected directions.

There are no stand out performances. This is a truly ensemble film and each member of the Bang Gang has their own moments to shine – and shine they do. Marilyn Lima as George and Daisy Broom as Laetitia are perfect foils for each other – one sure of herself until her world is shattered and the other who is initially shy but develops into a confident sexual partner only to lose her best friend. Finnegan Oldfield as Alex and newcomer Fred Hotier as Nikita are the two friends who, bored with their lives, join the Bang Gang club which eventually backfires, damaging their health and friendship.

Finally, to complete (and complicate) this band of friends, there is Lorenzo Lefèbvre who plays Gabriel, the isolate who eventually brings a reality check to the relationships.

Certainly not a film for those offended by nudity, Bang Gang is an honest and very upfront glimpse into the serious issues that face our youth today. To say I enjoyed it would be untrue, but it was compelling viewing and reminded me that the love-ins of the 1960s and 70s are still with us.
