DVD Review: Bark Ranger

Ranger is a dog ready for action. When his owner stumbles across a treasure map they race against criminals to find it first & save their beloved park.

DVD-BarkRangerRanger, voiced by Jon Lovitz, is a dog ready for action. Cared for by young Jack (Lucas Hoyos), Ranger soon becomes involved in a big adventure.

Helped by Chloe (Zoe Fraser), Jack stumbles across a treasure map promising unlimited wealth. When two wayward crooks enter the scene, all is set for a furious chase. With Ranger in tow, the young friends determine to beat the criminals and use their new wealth to save their beloved park.

Bark Ranger is one of those movies where everyone takes the money and run. If you’ve seen Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and others, you know what Bark Ranger will deliver. Being a talking animal movie it has the dubious benefit of endless canine wisecracks and animalistic hilarity – at least that’s the idea. Unfortunately the concept is so ineptly handled as to make Lassie Come Home look like Gone with the Wind.

It wouldn’t have been so bad had the CGI used to render the talking dog had been good. Sadly it is so poorly executed as to make Bark Ranger look as cheap as it probably cost. Added to the diabolical acting and a dreadful script talking down to its audience, Bark Ranger soon becomes a chore. As a form of punishment for naughty children it can’t be beaten however, with the threat of making them watch this sure to make them behave.

Bark Ranger is an appalling excuse of a children’s movie. Cheap, shoddy and uninspired, it is a howler of a film sure to drive viewers barking mad.
