DVD Review: Edge of Winter

An estranged father takes his boys on a shooting trip but they get snowed in and his fear of losing them pushes him over the edge.

Rob Connolly and Kyle Mann’s thriller is a slow burner that relies on atmosphere over action to maintain its tension and it does so quite well under Connolly’s careful direction.

Elliot Baker (Joel Kinnaman) is a man on the edge. As a divorced father, his kids are his world and his greatest fear is losing them as his ex-wife builds a new life. Taking his boys on a trip to the wilderness to teach them to shoot, they’re forced to take shelter in an isolated cabin after a car accident. Snowed in, Baker begins to crack as the nightmare weekend increases his fear that he’ll lose his boys completely. What began as a father-son bonding experience soon turns into a ordeal that has the boys fearing for their lives.

Featuring Tom Holland and Percy Hynes as the kids, Edge of Winter is an enjoyable watch with Brook and Will Blair’s score adding to the edgy mood. The film holds its strong undertones of tension throughout, creating a feeling that something bad could happen at any moment. Some of the twists are predictable but there are many surprises to raise both eyebrows.

The cast is good all-round, with Kinnaman, in particular, believable throughout his breakdown. It’s a fine performance.

Edge of Winter is an easy, pleasing watch that will quickly dwindle from memory but one which will chill a few bones.
