DVD Review: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 1

After 15 years in an underground bunker with an apocalypse cult, Kimmy Schmidt is determined to reclaim her life and discover the world anew.

After 15 years in an underground bunker, Kimmy Schmidt and her air-headed ‘sisters’ are rescued from the apocalypse cult that had hid them away so long ago. Free now from the clutches of the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, Kimmy sets forth to New York to reclaim her life and discover the world anew.

kimmyshmidtS1DVDIt’s an unlikely premise for a highly likeable show that shies away from sitcom slapstick yet exudes so much spirited fun. Ellie Kemper is stellar in the title role, displaying a wonderful sense of naivety and a boundless enthusiasm for life with all it has to offer. In the pilot episode, we see what kind of woman she is, and her moments of discovery exude so much charm that it’s difficult not to latch onto that unbridled joy, whether it be an encounter with a hand drier or the discovery of so many flavoured sweets.

Featuring comedian Carol Kane as her landlord and Tituss Burgess as her flamboyantly gay flat mate, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt uses its central character to teach us a quirky and comical lesson about never giving up and always seeking the bright side of life.

The show was created by comedian Tina Fey and 30 Rock showrunner Robert Carlock, and has already been renewed by Netflix for a further two seasons. With such comedy names behind it, that’s no surprise. The innocence of the central character is only matched by her exuberance and it’s a winning combination that makes Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt a refreshing and vibrant addition to your comedy lineup.
