Dykeotomy makes its Australian debut after premiering two years ago in San Francisco's Center for Sex and Culture. It is an exploration of gender, what it is, how we perceive it, and if we really need it, expertly told through conversations, poetry and stories by Kimberly Dark.

Dark is a fem dyke with a liking for butch women, leading her to question the roles we play and if such narrow tastes might make her closed-minded. From a leopard-skinned diary she reads stories of love, lust and identity, interspersed with a tête-à-tête with the audience.

She discusses issues of transitioning genders, gender fear, stereotypes and culture. One story questions the emphasis we place on our physical attributes, when we hear of two women requiring a hysterectomy, one by choice, the other from illness. Another tale speaks to us about our desire to protect those we love, regardless of the role we play.

Dark is a warm-hearted, eloquent performer with a poetic speech pattern not dissimilar to one of Laurie Anderson's avant-garde speak-songs. She's enthralling and compassionate with a hint of cheekiness.

While the intimacy of this show would fare better in a smaller venue, Dark, nonetheless, fills the hour with some thought provoking material and a final touch of poetic eroticism.
