East End Cellars’ top picks for dinner party drinks

Planning a dinner party? Michael Andrewartha of East End Cellars has selected four must-try beverages to serve at your next occasion.

2020 Kanta Adelaide Hills Riesling

Every dinner party needs a Riesling, and if you know me, you know I’m proud of all of my projects. Kanta Riesling is my pet project with arguably the world’s best Riesling producer, Egon Muller. We started in 2005 and I think this could be the best one yet, and after 13 years of doing this, you’d think we should know what we’re doing!

We changed the method up slightly in 2018, I won’t bore you with the details, but the wine has really benefitted, the 18 is light and lithe, with brilliant texture and that classic lime-y driving acidity that we love! It also ages superbly, and the current museum release, 2009, is absolutely stunning!

Adelaide Gin Company ‘Adelaide Gin’

Of the thirty distilleries in South Australia, my go-to is Adelaide Gin. Not “just another” SA gin, the Hickinbotham family have put their heart and soul, as well as a boatload of research into this dram. Made specifically for the Adelaide market, this embraces Orris Root (I didn’t know that this was the smell of violets either!) and Kangaroo Island lavender as well as a host of other traditional botanicals. They might be one of the newest players on the block, but this has become my newest Gin for both mixers and as the base for a Negroni.

2018 Deviation Road Loftia

I’ve been very fortunate to watch the development of this amazing wine family, from humble beginnings at the old dairy they purchased to their stunning cellar door and winery at Longwood, it’s been incredible to watch, Kate Laurie certainly knows how to make a drop, having trained in Champagne she makes some of Australia’s best bubbles, and for my money, I wouldn’t buy any other Australian sparkling, with their Loftia being at the top of my tree. Zesty, toasty and just the right amount of richness for every occasion!

Cost: $55.00 per bottle (buy here)

2021 Turon Wines Pinot Noir

I’ve been in this game long enough to see a few generations come and go, and when Turon White knocked on the door and showed his wines, I knew it was a good idea to buy up, like Apple shares in the ’90s…

The combination of immaculate fruit, incredible attention to detail and a stylish package all culminate to produce something that punches way above its weight in a very tough field, if you can find it you should snap it up! The Pinot market is a tough one to crack but Turon has it wrapped up!

Cost: $32.00 per bottle (buy here)
