Eat, Drink, Shop – Our Top Tips For Melbourne

I recently went on a girls long weekend to the lovely city of Melbourne.

Melbourne is such a short plane ride from SA (exactly one Famous magazine) which makes it a favourite amongst people in Adelaide for a weekend getaway.

My activities in the great state of Victoria can pretty much be summed up in three words – eat, drink, shop. Therefore, I thought I'd share with you some of my top tips for a weekend getaway in Melbourne if you are into any, or all, of the above.

Eat

It's pretty natural to constantly eat whilst on holiday so here are some of my Melbourne suggestions.

Breakfast – I could eat breakfast for three meals a day. The best thing about Melbourne? Every single cafe does all day breakfast. You can pretty much pick any and it will propably be pretty good but my favourite (and reasonably priced) was Cafe No5. www.cafeno5.com.au/

Pie Face – The latest 24 hour fast food craze that literally consists of pie's with, wait for it… faces. A bit more interesting than McDonalds when you're drunk at 2am and you don't regret it as much in the morning. I predict a Pie Face will show up in Adelaide in no time.

Lygon Street – Always pretty intense with a lot of older Italian men hassling you on the street and offering you free glasses of wine, garlic bread and phone numbers. If you are a young female and you enjoy having practical jokes played on you then Mercadante Woodfired Pizzeria is the place to eat. But seriously, it was really nice, even if we did 'eat in fear'.

Honorable mention: Lord Of The Fries – How can you not like something with such a witty name? Gluten free, fresh, guilt free fast food amazingness.

Drink

Rooftop Bar – One of the most popular bars in Melbourne with a great view of the city. If you can be bothered climbing 5 BILLION stairs it is definetly worth checking out. At least you're working off all the calories from all the breakfasts and Pie Faces. This bar also turns into a rooftop cinema in the Summer.

Bimbo Delux – Also has a rooftop and I personally feel a special affinity for a place named bimbo. Brunswick street has heaps of cool bars and clubs and this is just one of them. Bimbo also does $4 pizzas during the week.

The Carlton Yacht Club – One of Melbourne's hidden gems. We found this while wandering up Lygon Street and it apparently won an award for the best-written cocktail list in Australia. I can't say no to cocktails.

Shop

I am the huge advocate for the shopping quality in Adelaide but we can't compete with the sheer amount of boutiques there are in Melbourne. We spent most of our time at the shopping precincts below.

Bridge Road

Bargain hunters rejoice. You can't beat half price Sass and Bide. Need I say more.

Chapel Street

I could have spent all week on Chapel Street. It has everything and anything to suit your shopping desires.

Fat – A favourite amongst hipsters. They stock an excellent range of jeans, especially if you're tall. A dream come true for me!

Topshop – Smaller than I thought it would be but with a great range. Even if it's just to finally figure out what size you are so you can order online, Topshop is a must visit for any fashionista.

ALDO – Another European brand that we don't have in Adelaide. ALDO carries great priced shoes and accessories.

Brunswick Street

Brunswick Street basically has everything from nightclubs to cafes to op-shops and boutiques. It's where the cool people in Melbourne hang out and if you have the energy to search through a lot of crap vintage you're sure to come home with something amazing.

Hidden Gem: Kleins Perfumery – The most beautiful little store totally filled with fragrances. One of the best shops we visited.

Tip: InterContinental Melbourne – We didn't stay here but I sure would if I had the money. Great location and a beautiful hotel.
