Have you ever eaten pizza at the altar? Here’s your chance to.

Robert Johnson Vineyards’ cellar door in Verdun will now be serving up pizzas to all who visit. The quirky cellar door opened in a rehabbed Adelaide Hills church last year offering a unique wine tasting experience.

Complete with spectacular stained-glass windows and high lofted ceilings, visitors are often greeted by Robert Johnson himself.

With groovy melodic music building on the arty character of the church, Robert pours up his selections of 11 wines to all who pop by.

Visitors can try Grüner Veltliner with a lemon citrus scent to a Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon with roasted spice oak nuances as well as wines of Robert’s 30 acre vineyard and olive grove in Eden Valley.

Starting from this weekend, the cellar door will also be serving a range of pizza for visitors to pair with their wine.

All made on site, there will be a range of pizzas with simple toppings of high-quality local ingredients.

From smallgoods sourced at Skara Smallgoods in Mount Barker to vegetables from Hahndorf Fruit & Veg Market, the toppings are selected to bring out the best flavours of the key ingredients.

For $23, visitors can look forward to cacciatore with red onion, black olives; patata with kipfler potato, blue cheese, rosemary and speck; and mushroom with shallot, thyme and provolone.

There will also be salsiccia with pork and fennel sausage, cherry tomato red onion and rocket, and of course margherita which comes a little cheaper than the rest at $18.

Robert says he excited about the new offerings at his cellar door to go along with the wines.

“You can’t have pizza without wine,” Robert says.

“I’ve been given tips and training on pizza making from a popular restaurant in Adelaide, so visitors can trust the pizza will be amazing,”

“The pizzas will have a delicious thin crust and they will look and taste terrific.”

As well as trying the pizza’s, visitors can graze on charcuterie and cheese boards made from local small goods for $28.

With a trip to Verdun, we recommend seeing the gorgeous cellar door, meeting the vibrant character of Robert himself and trying his new delicious pizza.

Robert Johnson Vineyards’ cellar door is open Saturday’s and Sunday’s 11am – 5pm.

Walk-ins are welcome, but booking ahead via Facebook is preferred. Click here to book.
