Eight major Aussie magazines to close due to COVID-19

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has seen many industries take a severe hit, with the nation’s unemployment rate currently at a 22-year high.

Eight major Bauer Media Australia titles are set to close due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.

As officially announced this morning, Harper’s BAZAAR Australia, ELLE Australia, InStyle, Men’s Health Australia, Women’s Health Australia, Good Health, NW and OK! Australia will cease publication.

The eight magazines were suspended in May given the impact of travel restrictions and declining advertising revenue.

It has now been confirmed the titles will not return, with the digital versions also to be shut down.

The news comes just days after the sale of Bauer Media Australia’s publishing division to Mercury Capital.

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has seen many industries take a severe hit, with close to one million people currently unemployed.

Australia’s unemployment rate reached 7.4% in June, the highest it has been in 22 years.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is set to provide further information on the future of the JobSeeker and JobKeeper programs today.

The announcement comes ahead of Treasurer Josh Frydenberg’s budget update on Thursday, the first since the COVID-19 crisis hit the nation.

More to come.
