You are warmly invited to experience the breathtaking light and sound displays and entertainment at Aus Lights on the River this January at Elder Park / Tarntanya Wama.
The free, two-day event will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, 25 and 26 January and includes ceremonies and events for Australia Day 2023.
There will be a variety of displays and entertainment that will no doubt keep you booked and busy throughout the two days.
New displays and entertainment include:
• From 5:30pm, a creative digital screen display of various shapes spanning more than 60 metres will exhibit curated films alternating with live views of cultural programming, in a flowing spring of ideas, thoughts, stories moving between people.
• As afternoon delights flow into the evening, families can explore the Creative Workshop Space in which artists will lead interactive and creative activities providing families an opportunity to playfully explore a curious and interesting selection of organic materials to co-create a large art piece.
• Coming alive will be the giant inflatable turtle to experience storytelling theatre brought to you by the Nylon Zoo team, and explore the Underwater Habitats, in an imaginative and educational journey that celebrates the biodiversity of animals with whom we share Country.
• Launching at 9pm on both nights, Adelaide’s beloved iconic rotunda will premier an exciting story in light, representing the life story of an ancient river red gum that sustains a living ecosystem.
• The exterior of the Festival Centre will be illuminated with colours and animation of the six cultural seasons known by the First Nation custodians of the Adelaide Plains.
• Supersized bushland creatures in the Land Habitat surround the Ecomaze where the public can explore a garden and bushland up close like a bee through a magically magnified microcosm and learn about natural habitats in a tactile way.
• A Cinematic Fireworks Display will feature captivating colours, rhythms, and seasons of our expansive landscape. The dynamic display will be expressed through a piece of original synchronized music, moving image and fireworks composition created especially for Aus Lights on the River 2023. The show will mirror the diversity of nature, culture, and the impressive and inspirational visual themes of our country, places and people who call it home.
The Aus Lights on the River offers a unique opportunity for the audience to experience a glittering display of colourful light spilling upwards from the trunks of the trees into foliage and onto the word ‘Country’, casting reflections into the Torrens River. The water and light show illuminate the environment, culture and community voices – in reference to the themes of Australia Day 2023 – connection to nature and belonging to Country.
ADCSA Chief Executive, Jan Chorley, said the visual spectacular also aims to encourage the public to reflect.
“Aus Lights on the River will provide an opportunity for us to reflect on what being Australian really means and how we connect with this great continent and its peoples. It also provides a moment to ask ourselves how do we belong to country and connect with our natural environment.
“We are looking forward to communities attending the event and experiencing the area transformed. We welcome everyone to bring a blanket and enjoy the sights and sounds along the gently-sloped riverbank,” Ms Chorley said.
Aus Lights on the River will be held on 25 and 26 January from 5.30pm onwards.
