Elpis Food and Wine bar has opened on Gouger Street this week serving modern Japanese cuisine.
Co-owner Elton Zhang, who also owns Erato Teppanyaki, says the menu mirrors the modern food that is popular in Japan at the moment.
“It’s different from traditional Japanese food, but it follows the trend that is in Japan right now,” Elton says.
“We are trying to bring that cooking style to our customers in Adelaide.”
Head chef Satoshi, who used to be the head chef at Sean’s Kitchen at SkyCity, will be serving a range of smaller and larger dishes that are perfect for sharing.
Customers can look forward to smaller dishes including Hiramasa Kingfish with Buttermilk and Goat’s Curd, to larger dishes including Grilled Chicken with Teriyaki Glaze, Leak and Yolk.
Elton says the star dish on the menu is the Ora King Salmon with Seaweed and Crackling, while they also offer a range of oysters.
Elton says Elpis Food and Wine’s menu differs from traditional Japanese food in that it does not have a strong focus on seafood, yet the cooking methods still remain similar.
“It’s different because traditional Japanese food is mostly seafood and sashimi as well as ramen and sushi,” Elton says.
“We don’t have a strong focus on those dishes, and we also have a strong focus on how we plate the dishes.”
Elton decided to open another restaurant on Gouger Street because of the star location and mixed culture of the area.
While it is the sister restaurant of Erato Teppanyaki, Elpis Food and Wine offers a different experience for those who visit. The chefs at Erato Teppanyaki cook the dishes in front of diners while the new restaurant is more of a semi fine dining experience.
Elton says there are new dishes on offer soon with Ox Tongue, Beef Jerky and Octopus on the cards to join the stellar line up of food on the menu.
