After an astonishing 529 days on the run, the resourceful miniature dachshund known as Valerie has finally been captured on Kangaroo Island.
The news, confirmed by Kangala Wildlife Rescue yesterday afternoon, brings an end to a remarkable tale of survival that has captivated hearts both locally and internationally since the small dog went missing in November 2023.
Valerie disappeared while on holiday with her owners, sparking extensive but ultimately unsuccessful searches at the time.
Against all odds, sightings of the diminutive dog, still sporting her distinctive pink collar, began to surface again earlier this year, some 15kms from where she was last seen. Wildlife experts shared their disbelief at her resilience, speculating that she had survived by hunting small prey and finding water sources in the rugged terrain.
Dedicated volunteers from Kangala Wildlife Rescue have been working tirelessly in recent weeks, deploying surveillance cameras and various trapping methods in the area where Valerie was most frequently sighted.
Recognizing the limitations of traditional methods given Valerie’s unpredictable visits, the team devised a remote-control system. This system sent an alert via mobile phone when Valerie entered the trap, significantly increasing their chances of success.
The trap itself was carefully designed with the comforts of home for Valerie, complete with her favourite toys, her owner’s clothing, and food, helping her feel secure enough to return. Their persistence paid off yesterday when Valerie finally entered the specially designed trap.
“After weeks of tireless efforts by Kangala Wildlife Rescue volunteers and partner organizations, Valerie has been safely rescued and is fit and well,” the rescue organization announced in a social media post, accompanied by a video of the long-lost canine.
The search for Valerie involved over 1000 volunteer hours and more than 5000 km travelled by volunteers.
The news has been met with an outpouring of relief and celebration across Kangaroo Island and beyond. Valerie’s story has become a symbol of hope and determination, and her successful capture is a testament to the dedication of the wildlife rescue team.
Arrangements are now being made for Valerie to be reunited with her owners, who have been kept informed throughout the long and challenging effort to bring their beloved pet home. After an incredible solo adventure lasting well over a year, Valerie’s unplanned extended stay on Kangaroo Island has finally come to a happy conclusion.
